Materials I use
Surface
I use five different surfaces depending on what the subject is and best overall finish for it.
All papers are both archival and acid free.
- Fabriano Artístico paper is 100% cotton, chlorine and acid free also archival.
- Pastelmat is a premium card surface. It is Acid Free, Archival and Lightfast.
-
Grafix Dura-Lar. This polyester film combines the best features of Mylar and Acetate. It is both acid free and archival. This surface works very well on subjects with lots of fluffy and detailed fur.
- For People Portraits I use Bristol smooth acid free paper.
- or Strathmore Toned paper.
Pencils
I use a few different brands of pencils as I find they can work quite differently from each other.
The coloured pencils I use all have a good lightfast rating so they don’t fade over time.
- Caran d’Ache Luminance coloured pencils are the most lightfast of all coloured pencils meeting the highest of international standards: ASTM D-6901.
- Faber Castell Polychomos are among some of the finest oil-based colour pencils. Each pencil is coloured with high-quality artists' pigments suspended in an oil-based binder.
- Derwent Lightfast pencils are oil-based, smooth, creamy and very lightfast.
